As I see it with working with the AKC and dog breeding/ showing.
Contracts are only as good as the people that they involve!
I have found when it comes down to it the Contracts are worth little more then the paper they are written on!
With AKC's present policies,
now Please hear me out, Really!
Your limited registration is crap.
Let me say it again, YOUR LIMITED REGISTRATION IS CRAP.
The AKC already, and has for nearly 20 years, registers litters from limited registration parents.
YES, really.
RULES APPLYING TO REGISTRATIONS AND DISCIPLINE
Chapter 3 section 6
The AKC maintains the stance that if puppies are born from two known pedigree parents the folks who purchase those puppies DESERVE papers.
IF you sell puppies without papers? Don't worry. The AKC has that covered too.
If the buyer gets pushy, if they know the parent's names, if they know your kennel name, if you provided a contract, if you did anything a good breeder does anyway- it becomes an ordeal, and the AKC will get involved because ... those purchasing purebred dogs deserve papers and if AKC can get money they will do it!
Go ahead and call the AKC. Be as outraged as I was when I found out (and yes, I found out the hard way). Get ANGRY. Threaten to only register UKC (because they actually stand by limited registration, fyi) sound the alarms but realize that "limited" is just to help you sleep at night. It's actually meaningless.
The AKC does not particularly care that you are upset.
They ARE upset that suddenly were paying attention but it won't stop them.
It is up to us as breeders to protect our lines and our dogs from puppy millers and people that will breed them in harmful, dum ways!
Be diligent in where your puppies go. Choose excellent homes, have thorough contracts if you think that will help and be prepared to enforce them. Don't expect to be backed up by the AKC now, or ever. They are a registry, not a court of law.
Sadly their are always flaws in any registry this is just a fact! A registry is only as good as the people that are part of it and people by and large are greedy and driven by money. I think the concept behind the AKC is a good one and they have long lines of some of the best bred dogs.
The AKC sady though has many flaws i will never deny that but this is why when someone gets a pet puppy from me I have it sterilized before it leaves my onership. I belive with all the hard work that has gone into these dogs if someone wants to pick up breeding and showing them they need to pay the cost as well. On the other hand I also belive that if someone wants a dog, turly as just a pet, and can provide a good home with all the dog needs and give it love, who am i to stop that! I offer Puppies to pet homes already strilized at a lower price to give good people the chance to own and love a purebreed wounderfull dog as a pet and family member. This is what i have decided to do!
